Africa Day in Cluj – May 25th 2022 – Grupul de Parteneriat African

Having lived in Romania for the last 10 years, I am still amazed by the difference in our cultural way of being. Being born in Burundi and living there until the age of 24, I feel both proud and lucky to be an African. “It is said that the child belongs to the community”. This family is not just your mother or father who brought you into the world. It’s your aunts and uncles, both maternal and paternal, your cousins, that very close friend and family neighbor and the list goes on.

From the time I was a child I knew that I had to respect adults regardless of whether they were “family” or not. Obedience is the rule, the “parents” were like little gods in my eyes. When they said something, we did it; they were always right and sometimes without logic. There was no point in asking questions for fear of being the one without reason. All these things taught me to be patient, to hold my tongue without missing ideas and to experience diversity in all its glory and rigueur.

This Saturday was about family. This African family rich in values and in colors. This family that impresses by its culture and yet intrigues by its diversity. This family that is for some a country and for others unknown, this united family that is Africa.

Happy Africa Day to us! ❤️ 📸 Andreea Campeanu
